Jessica Sunnebo’s 2023 thesis explores the poetry of Swedish poet Nina Södergren (1924–2015) through an ecocritical and animistic lens. Birdpoetic Worlds: Sensing the More-than-Human Worlds Through Nina Södergren’s Bird Poems aims to identify and explore how Södergren’s bird-poetics serve as an invitation to sense a relational experience and interconnectedness with the more-than-human world. This essay, Sensing Birdpoetic Worldslds, is an excerpt from Sunnebo’s thesis, written specifically for the Winged Words Nest. It focuses particularly on Södergren’s embodied approach to writing poetry, in which she attentively listens to and immerses herself in nature’s soundscapes and the presence of birds. Read the essay below. The collection of images includes photographs taken by Jessica Sunnebo during her visit to Södergren’s home, which is now lived in by her daughter, who has provided the pictures of her mother. The pictures of Nina and the Birds are taken by Astrid Broberg.
